This paper explores the King and Commoner tradition within English ballads written during Late Middle Ages through to Early Modern Period. The is defined by monarchs being either deliberately or mistakenly unrecognised a member of labouring class. author chronologically examines way in which fifteenthcentury radicalism was gradually erased how later examples motif became more conservative nature, reinforcing rather than challenging social hierarchy medieval England. In particular, it highlights rare voice afforded commoner earlier absent those sixteenth seventeenth centuries. It replaced declarations loyalty king.
